What has inspired you to stay at Bernstein for as long as you have?
I’m proud to be a part of an organization whose values align with my own. Bernstein was an early adopter, and manufacturer, of innovative impact investment portfolios that tackle issues related to climate change, access to clean drinking water and healthy food, bridging the educational divide and encouraging diversity in the workforce. Likewise, Bernstein doesn’t just talk the talk when it comes to advancing initiatives. Before it became a standard, the firm banned plastic water bottles from its offices and decided to go paperless. During recent global challenges, Bernstein rose to the occasion, providing support to organizations doing critical work related to the pandemic. The firm also invested internally to promote equality, adding diverse representation to AB’s board and hiring to better attract and develop diverse talent. I’m also devoted to learning about new ways to make the world a better place. Bernstein is the perfect platform to promote these forward-looking ideas.
What is the most fulfilling aspect of being an advisor to your clients?
For many families, wealth transfer is about more than passing along dollars and cents. By virtue of my clients’ desire to transfer family values, and assets, from one generation to the next, they’ve come to rely on my expertise. As an advisor, I protect the legacy of both. Another professional goal of mine is guiding the next generation and teaching them how to be responsible stewards of capital. This may come in the form of philanthropy or impact investing, or ideally both. No matter the format, ensuring the legacy goals of my clients is not only fulfilling, it’s my calling. Plus, the work I’ve been privileged to do with my clients has benefited my home life as it’s shaped the philosophies and values I pass along to my own “next generation.”
What passions do you pursue outside of work?
As a father of three young children, my life outside of work revolves almost entirely around family. However, it’s a pleasure because I have a blast coaching my two sons’ Little League teams and organizing events for their elementary school. From park clean-up days to fundraisers, like the annual talent show, Holiday Festival and Halloween Dance, I support these organizations while also teaching kids about community and the importance of teamwork. It’s a great way to give back. When it’s time to unwind, I recharge through time spent outdoors. Some of my favorite activities are going on a backwoods ATV drive, white water rafting trips or heading out to open waters for a deep-sea fishing adventure. Staying active in nature keeps me challenged beyond my advising work and allows me to meet new and interesting people along the way.
