Total Tax Optimization
Optimize all your tax decisions at once
While the investment industry has a tax optimization problem, investors in the upper echelons of wealth have dozens. The solution to any given tax concern may seem clear, but tying those solutions together is where we tend to find gaps.
That's why Bernstein's Total Tax Optimization (TTO) framework looks beyond individual tax tactics to a central, whole balance sheet view. Is tax friction eroding your wealth? Use our Tax Leakage Scorecard to see where avoidable tax drag may be undermining your after-tax wealth.
When good tax decisions collide
Most wealthy families make many tax-sensitive decisions across accounts, trusts, entities, investment vehicles, liquidity events, and estate plans. But even sound tax decisions can work against one another when they’re made in isolation. Each choice may be defensible on its own—but without coordination, local wins can create household-level losses. Now, Bernstein’s Total Tax Optimization approach helps identify where tax friction may be hiding—then helps you address it.

Address both taxes and investments
Ever wonder why tax optimization isn’t part of building a portfolio from the start? Because most wealth managers lack the right infrastructure.
The secret is integration—viewing your entire financial picture as a single system, then combining knowledge and strategies into a cohesive view so all the parts to work together smoothly to deliver your end goals. That’s what Bernstein’s Total Tax Optimization is designed to do.
Get the basic tax decisions right
Each layer of Bernstein’s Total Tax Optimization framework builds on the one beneath it, with after-tax wealth management maximized when they’re all synchronized from a central point of view. The foundation of tax optimization includes basic structural decisions that shape after-tax outcomes from the start:
- Asset location
- Municipal bonds
- Deferral and holding-period discipline
- Step-up in basis
- Trust design
Choose the right tax-aware investments
With the foundational layer in place, investors can turn to structural decisions—choices about wrappers, vehicles, and pathways that can improve after-tax outcomes. They include:
- ETF wrappers
- separately managed accounts (SMAs) with tax-loss harvesting
- real estate provisions
Enhance after-tax returns
The latest generation of strategies designed to improve after-tax wealth management serve as both investment and tax vehicles, and they can’t be evaluated on either dimension alone. Their dual nature enhances their appeal, but it also makes them more complicated to coordinate.
They include:
- Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI), Private Placement; Variable Annuities (PPVA), and Insurance Dedicated Funds (IDFs);
- exchange funds versus 351 ETF exchanges;
- tax-harvesting long-short strategies;
- ordinary loss-generating hedge fund strategies.
Frontier solutions
For decades, the industry approached tax optimization as after-the-fact trimming once the “real work” of asset allocation was done. Bernstein has taken a different approach.
For years, we’ve treated after-tax wealth management as a core objective and considered tax implications at every turn. Today, we’re taking that philosophy further, using innovative systems and measurement to support it at scale.
Because the next frontier isn’t about minimizing taxes. It’s ensuring more of your wealth is kept, compounded, and passed on.

What is tax drag and why does it matter?
Tax drag refers to the gradual reduction in your investment returns due to taxes on income, dividends, and capital gains. While subtle, tax drag can have a significant impact on your portfolio’s long-term performance.
Imagine two portfolios with the same pretax returns and market risk. The only difference is the tax drag: one experiences a 0.8% drag, while the other faces a 2.0% drag each year. At first glance, a 1.2% difference might not seem like much. Yet over two and a half decades, this seemingly narrow gap can lead to a whopping $11.1 million difference in wealth on a $10 million portfolio.
What makes tax optimization so hard?
Part of the problem is that the US tax code was built piece by piece. Tax breaks, exceptions, and limits pile up on top of one another, with little regard for how they interact.
The same split shows up among an investor’s advisors. We believe the best after-tax results come when one “controller” keeps track of the full financial picture and works closely with specialists to harmonize the whole.
A score is only the starting point
Your scorecard can help identify areas of concern, but the greatest opportunity often lies in how those areas interact. Bernstein advisors can help coordinate tax, investment, estate, and liquidity decisions through a unified balance sheet lens.
