What inspired you to join Bernstein?
I spent 29 years as a commercial banker, structuring debt facilities for middle-market businesses. I saw that the needs of the business owner evolved over time, and that as a lender I could not always find a solution for the owner. As an independent advisor, Bernstein is a perfect fit for me to serve these owners effectively, as a sounding board while they grow or transition their businesses and as a true guardian or fiduciary of their wealth strategies.
Tell me about the types of clients you work with.
My practice focuses on two areas: 1) owners of lower- to middle-market businesses who are seeking growth capital or a transition; 2) corporate executives who hold public stock and are looking for a plan to diversify their holdings. I also believe using my skills to help the greater community is important, so I sit on three nonprofit boards. In these roles, I can provide my skills to serve a greater purpose—the community.
Which book had the most profound impact on you and why?
I enjoy reading historical biographies of American leaders in politics and business. One of my favorite is Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. by Ron Chernow. This 800+ page book recounts the rise of John D. Rockefeller from the establishment of Standard Oil through the breakup of the company and the establishment of one of the first philanthropic foundations. Reading Rockefeller’s story highlighted for me the upsides and downsides of the free markets, and the need for balance in the markets in order to achieve equity and freedom.
